Jessica awoke very early. She lay in bed thinking, her emotions again on a roller coaster. One moment she was happy that her dad was doing so well, the next she fought anxiety over her mom’s predicament. Then came feelings of inner warmth, and yet, impatience. She really liked being with Dan. She only wished they had known each other longer so that she could express her sentiments without feeling too forward and foolish. Knowing someone for only three days does not exactly qualify as truly knowing that person. And yet, she remembered how her mom had often spoken of still getting to know her dad. After all these years of being married, their relationship was still growing, they were still learning about each other.
Entering into marriage must be somewhat of a risk, Jessica thought. Even when one thinks they know the person, do they really? Come to think of it, does one really know oneself? What an odd arrangement marriage is. No matter what the circumstance, no matter how well you think you know someone, you are still taking a risk. Could she take such a risk, assuming the offer of marriage would someday come? And from whom? Was she being presumptuous to think that Dan really liked her? He seemed to. He was definitely bending the rules to include her in the progress of the investigation, as well as meet with her for breakfast, lunch, and coffee last night. Well, if he doesn’t like me, then he sure is acting strange.
One other emotion was surfacing in her thoughts. It had kept her from a sound sleep, and now she was able to put her finger on what it was. She feared for Dan. There was the possibility of a bomb being planted at the TransAmerica Building. If the crayon message was correct, today could be the day it would explode. I hope Dan doesn’t have to search the building today. They have a bomb squad. Surely that’s their job. Dan shouldn’t have to do that. She spoke out loud, “Oh, great. On top of my fears for Dad and Mom, now I fear for Dan. Will this end?” She turned her head and looked at the clock: 5:33 a.m. She remembered Dan telling her last night that he was to meet at the TA Building with his staff and Detective Smith this morning at 6:30.
She sat up. This won’t do, she thought. I can’t sleep. I might as well go down there and see if they’ve discovered new information, or if the bomb threat was a hoax.
She got up and got ready for the day. As usual, she dressed modestly, wearing khaki pants and a pullover. She washed and dried her face, but did not put on makeup. Makeup and freckles didn’t mix well. They could be covered, of course, but she never cared for the amount of makeup required to do it. All her life she managed without it, and no one ever seemed to notice. In fact, most people admired her complexion as well as her hair.
